The Jaguars on Thursday signed linebacker Nate Wayne, an eight-year veteran who was released by the Eagles on Feb.24.

Wayne played in nine regular-season games last year, starting seven. He lost his job when Jeremiah Trotter was inserted at middle linebacker and Mark Simoneau moved to an outside spot at midseason.

Wayne, 30, was slowed by hamstring injuries in the second half of the season and was inactive for the final four regular-season games. He returned to the starting lineup for the team's first playoff game against the Vikings and played in the nickel defense for the last two, including the team's Super Bowl loss to the Patriots at Alltel Stadium.

The 6-foot, 237-pounder was originally drafted by the Broncos in 1998 out of Mississippi. Wayne, who has played in 85 NFL games and started 63, also played for the Packers.

Wayne could push Akin Ayodele, who received the low tender from the Jaguars this year as a restricted free agent. Ayodele will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
